Race Signals 

 

 STARTING SEQUENCE
"Warning" -- START # FLAG  Hoisted with a sound 5 minutes before the start.

Flag P

"Preparatory" --"P" FLAG -- OR a starting penalty flag is hoisted with the start # flag and a sound 4 minutes before the start.
"Preparatory" FLAG  Lowered one minute before the start with  sound
"Start" -- START # FLAG  Lowered with sound. The next division flag may be hoisted simultaneously or with any delay
NUMERAL 1 -- First start. 
NUMERAL 2 -- Second start. 
NUMERAL 3 -- Third start  etc

GENERAL RACE SIGNALS
ANSWERING PENNANT "AP" -- Races not started are postponed. Warning or other signal will be made one minute after removal.
CHARLIE "C" -- "Course Change". New mark numbers are displayed.
LIMA "L" -- Ashore: a notice to racers is posted. Afloat: come within hail.
MIKE "M" -- I am a replacement mark. Go around me instead.
NOVEMBER "N" -- This race is abandoned, return to starting area for subsequent races. If shown with ALPHA "A" then all races today are abandoned so go home.
SIERRA "S" -- Shortened course.
YANKEE "Y" -- Wear personal buoyancy. It's a big lake.

RECALLS & STARTING PENALTIES
1ST SUBSTITUTE -- General Recall. A new start will be sequenced after remaining normal starts for other divisions.
XRAY "X" -- Individual Recall. The committee boat will attempt to hail the individual boats over early and may answer on VHF channel 68, but the onus to know and restart is on boats over early.
INDIA "I" -- Rule 30.1 is in effect. If you are on the course side of the starting line within one minute of the start, you must return to the pre-start side around either end before starting or be nuked.
ZULU "Z" -- Rule 30.2 is in effect.If you are in the triangle formed by the starting line and the first mark within one minute of the start and there is a general recall, then you will suffer a penalty.
BLACK FLAG -- Rule 30.3 is in effect. If you are in the triangle formed by the starting line and the first mark within one minute of the start, then you will be DSQ without a hearing.

 

START NUMBERS

These number pennants, if used together with other signals such as course change, identify which starts are affected by those signals.

NUMERAL 1 -- Start 1 --

NUMERAL 2 -- Start 2 --

NUMERAL 3 -- Start 3 --

NUMERAL 4 -- Start 4 --

NUMERAL 5 -- Start 5 --
